Medicine, pharmaceutical drugs or medication are all names of a product that helps cure, treat or diagnose an illness or injury. The official definition is "Any substance or combination of substances presented as having properties for treating or preventing disease in human beings; or any substance or combination of substances which may be used in or administered to human beings either with a view to restoring, correcting or modifying physiological functions by exerting a pharmacological, immunological or metabolic action, or to making a medical diagnosis."

Drugs can be classified many different ways. By availability for example - some are available over the counter, some require a prescription. Medication can be also categorized by what are medications used for - some treat eyes, others protect the skin or reduce pain.

Another way drugs can be divided is by their origin:

  • Natural - herbal, plant, mineral or marine origin
  • Chemical as well as natural - i.e. steroids (partly natural, partly chemical)
  • Chemical synthesis
  • Animal - i.e. hormones or enzymes
  • Microbial - i.e. antibiotics
  • Biotechnology generic-engineering
  • Radioactive substance

Globally distributed pharmaceuticals have many components. From packaging and marketing materials to Patient Information Leaflets (PILs). Precise, quality translations are more important in this field, than in any other.
